Did you know that...?
The term Hamburger derives from the words "Hamburger" and "Steak" literally: coming from the city of Hamburg.
It seems that the famous American sandwich was invented by German immigrants who, around the 19th century, reached the new continent by ship, and chose to ration their food by creating beef meatballs. The name they chose for this tasty dish was Hamburger.
Americans do not recognize this origin and prefer to assign the honor of the invention to Walter Anderson of Wichita (Kansas) who, between 1915 and 1916, standardized the cooking of grilled beef patties by serving them with slices of sweet bread.
If the origin is the result of various legends, what we can collect today are many recipes which, one more delicious than the other, enhance the flavor of this particular yet simple sandwich.
How is the American hamburger prepared?
Americans tend to flavor their dishes with spices like paprika and thick sauces like BBQ sauce.
Alternative burgers
The variations when it comes to burgers don't just concern the dough, but range from spices to aromas, without distinction! The secret is to maintain the right balance to best satisfy the palate!
Vegetarian burgers, blended burgers, chickpea burgers and mixed burgers. Recent years have seen a significant increase in these variants, after all, customer needs have become more refined and the market is responding to needs in a different way.
Organizing a hamburger lunch has never been so easy, and if the grill is not your preferred method of cooking, you can opt for a baked hamburger, which is (almost) as good as grilling.
The choice to add vegetarian burgers can be a winning one even if only carnivores are present at the table: an alternative side dish that perfectly matches the mood of the lunch!
Ingredients and procedure
The ingredients to prepare an American hamburger are:
- ground beef or mixed meat
- pepper
- salt
- paprika
- Cheddar cheese
- lettuce leaves
- onion
- tomato
- sauce to taste: mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, mustard or ketchup
- soft white bread
Method:
- First you need to heat the grill or plate over a high flame, or use the barbecue.
- Sprinkle a little coarse salt on the griddle to prepare a tasty base. Remember that to check if the hamburger is cooked you will need to have a thermometer at hand: 60 degrees for rare cooking, 70 degrees for medium cooking and 80 degrees for a well-cooked product.
- Place your burgers on the hob and leave to cook over medium heat . When the meat has browned, change sides to cook the other half.
- In the meantime , cut the buns in half and when the hamburger is almost finished cooking , place them on the griddle to add a touch of crunch to the bread.
- Wash and cut the vegetables into thin slices , trying not to ruin the lettuce leaves which will add color to your dish.
- Remove the bread from the heat and spread the chosen sauce on both sides , add the meat sprinkled with paprika and complete with the previously cleaned and sliced vegetables.
- Lastly, add the cheddar cheese which will begin to melt upon contact with the hot meat, close the sandwich and bring to the table!
