Description
Natural beef burger . Burger weighing approximately 150 grams. In German hamburger is the demotic of Hamburg. Beef patties were probably common in the city and port of Hamburg around the beginning of the 19th century; the recipe was brought to North America by numerous German immigrants to the United States in that same period, most of whom left from the port of Hamburg, Germany's largest commercial port, and spread under the name hamburger steak. The first appearance of the recipe on an American menu dates back to 1836, although the first documented use of the term Hamburg steak dates back to 1884. The use of the hamburger variant appeared for the first time in 1889 in Walla Walla, a Washington newspaper. In 1902 there was a description of the Hamburg steak similar to the modern concept of the hamburger. The etymology of the Swiss Italian word, meaning minced and pressed meatball, is probably parallel to that of the English word hamburger: also in this case it indicates the origin of the recipe from the North-European Germanic area.
