My Patong recipe: from viral trend to offline recipe
“La Mia Patong” and Masterchef 12: when the double meaning goes viral
We know that no one is spared on the web, especially if you participate in a prime time program that has millions of people following it live. Yes but - you might ask - why are we talking about gossip on your online butcher's blog? Because the program in question is Masterchef 12, the super popular culinary talent show all over the world!
Why did my Patong go viral?
We therefore include the three great chefs reconfirmed in this edition Antonino Cannavacciuolo, Bruno Barbieri and Giorgio Lucarelli, we include innovative dishes and the names that the aspirants give to their creation shortly before tasting, we mix it with some good "old-fashioned" irony and here is the meme is around the corner. |
In this edition, we found a promising young girl called Letizia who in one of the last tests prepared a dish definitely not within the reach of Masterchef but with a particular name that has now gone viral on TikTok: my Patong. Obviously with a dedicated explanation "because it's colourful, spicy, acidic like me", which certainly doesn't help to avoid adding even more irony.
Here the recipe for my Patong - or rather - the name immediately started to go viral online... and the rest is history.
But what dish are we talking about? In fact the dish, in addition to causing laughter, was defined as "not worthy of the level of the program". In fact, Letizia presented a recipe with rice, mushrooms and chicken defined as "hospital", taking it directly to the pressure test.
Patong meaning: beyond the online joke
In addition to the sympathy on the web that has recently been circulating around this location, where is Patong located?
Patong is a resort town located on the island of Phuket, Thailand. Typical Patong cuisine includes - obviously - Thai dishes such as Pad Thai, Tom Yum, Green Curry, Massaman Curry and Papaya Salad, as well as street food and fresh fish specialities. |
Being a tourist location, there is also a wide choice of international cuisine, including sushi, Italian, Indian and Western options. A cultural variety that enriches this paradise on earth on a daily basis.
Here is the mystery revealed: the chicken, rice and mushrooms that could recall these aromas were combined badly by the competitor and were not up to the standards of the dishes we can find in these locations. And so, we decided to present our version that "maybe" could have saved the girl, if we then add quality Italian products, success will be assured.
From the idea of my patong recipe, here is the dish in our opinion
Tamarind chicken with mushrooms and rice: Thai recipe

- 200 g chopped fresh mushrooms
- 1/4 cup tamarind concentrate
- 2 teaspoons of brown sugar

Recipe procedure for my Patong (revisited)
Cut the chicken breast into 2 or 3 cm cubes and sprinkle it with brown sugar, salt and pepper. In a pan - preferably a wok type -, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat and brown the chicken until golden, about 3 minutes per side. Remove the chicken and set aside.
In the same pan, add the onion, garlic and mushrooms and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes.
Add the tamarind concentrate, brown sugar, salt and black pepper to the pan and mix well. Add the chicken broth and mix again.
Add the chicken to the pan and cover with the tamarind mixture. Cook over medium-low heat for 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
If necessary, add curry or turmeric, add chopped fresh onion and serve hot with white basmati rice.
